Bhoomiheen Sewa Samiti Keywords Rural, landless, dalits, primary, upper primary Geographical Location Banda District, Uttar Pradesh Languages Hindi, English Philosophy/Beliefs Bhoomiheen Sewa Samiti believes that the aim of education cannot be separated from (and is in fact the same as) the aim of life. Each child should be able to get into the process of self-discovery, understand her/his own abilities, aptitudes and tendencies and then employ those for service of society. An education institution has to be positioned in the context of the historical and societal changes taking place in the area it is working in. For Bhoomiheen the transition is from feudalism to a more modern egalitarian society. The school is a congregation of children who are provided experiences/opportunities to grow up together. They are in an environment where they can discover themselves - as a group and as individuals. They are provided a variety of experiences and allowed self-expression to pursue their skills and interests. The school encourages democracy, voice civilly against oppression, and learning to live with dignity. BSS believes that knowledge is a growing field and neither teachers nor books can authorize finality of knowledge. Knowledge discovery and creating is a part of education. The child learns to both discover and create knowledge. The activity of the child and not the teacher is central to learning at BSS. Objective/Mission/Goals Bhoomiheen Sewa Samiti is a voluntary service society committed to the task of national reconstruction. The society's office is in Allahabad but the work is in a village called Aau in Atarra tehsil of the backward Banda district of UP. The society aims to provide basic education and skills to children of the landless and extremely poor kids of the Banda District in UP state of India. The educational activities of the Society take place just outside the residential area of the Aau village in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere in the lap of nature. The educational activities are in two parts; a non-formal primary school (classes 1 to 5); and a formal but highly innovative junior high school (classes 6 to 8) The Society's primary aim is the empowerment of the poorest and most oppressed sections of our society. The area is feudal/semi-feudal by nature. Work Description The educational activities are in two parts; a non-formal primary school (classes 1 to 5); and a formal but highly innovative junior high school (classes 6 to 8). The 3Rs and learning is accomplished by relating knowledge to daily life, apart from using specific techniques or methods. Lalti Uniyal, BSS's director says "For e.g. - in civics - children find it hellish to learn about elections, houses etc. So we had elections in the school. The school had 4 groups. We actually went through an election process within the school. Some children were press people, some in the election commission and some votes were even invalid Campaigning happened. Through the process a school chief minister emerged. This process itself taught them. We then explored the idea of the responsibility of the new government. So this government will be a genuine Seva government and not like the ones we have today. When something goes wrong in the school this new government was made responsible for certain things in the school. What happened is that the children learnt the process through real life examples."
