Katha Jharna
Kathai Aruvai in Hindi
'Kathai Aruvi story cards brought out earlier in Tamil is now available in Hindi as Katha Jharna.' Katha Jharna is a collection of 100 stories in laminated cards written in simple Hindi for children in primary classes. The cards can serve as self-learning materials where children can relate to them in their own way.
Why Katha Jharna?
A large number of children in rural schools are first generation learners. Textbooks are the only reading material available to them in schools and in their homes.
Improved Learning achievements are linked to Improved Reading abilities. In order for children to become good readers they should have access to a wide range of reading material.
Reading and writing happen best when there is context and children make out the meaning of the text being read. Activities that are rich in context engage the attention of children effortlessly. Stories and riddles handled sensitively provide the most fertile ground for the children's imagination and expression. Nothing holds the attention of children more effectively than stories.
There is dearth of storybooks and supplementary reading material in most primary schools spread across the country. Even the ones available remain locked up in cupboards Library Experiences, Reading Corners in the classroom can enrich the teaching and learning process and indirectly support classroom learning.
'Katha Jharna' includes all types of stories - folk tales, historical, humorous, mythological, science based and contemporary stories. The original Tamil version, namely Kathai Aruvi, was published by CHATNATH TRUST, Chennai. The Hindi version of it is available with Room to Read India Trust, E 18A, East of Kailash, New Delhi 110065; phone 011-41750236, 42567136. The price of the set of 100 laminated cards is Rs. 650/- for schools. We are keen that primary schools, educational institutions and NGOs in various parts of the country will utilize the story cards in their programs for children.
