Suvidya began in 1994 to promote and utilize innovative ideas in education and experiential learning. Dr. S N Gananath, a geophysicist-turned-teacher, initiated this group. It was intended that the school going children in and around Jalahalli in Raichur district would be the primary beneficiaries. Suvidya has identified Math, Kannada and Science as the priority areas. The expansion of elementary education in India has often not been supported by the development of teaching material that can make learning enjoyable and fun. Poor quality of instruction is one of the main reasons for high rates of dropout and low achievement levels of learning even at the primary stage. The main aim of Suvidya is to improve the quality of education in terms of classroom interaction. The methodology employed involves the creation of models or teaching aids to illustrate mathematical concepts. The group also organizes training workshops for teachers. Work Description Suvidya via its vast research has come to understand that learning mathematics remains a nightmarish experience for the majority of school going children. It is more so amongst rural children with dropout rates increasing in rural and government run corporation schools due to "Mathsphobia". Although it is known that children in the age group of 7-14 years require prior concrete experience to catch abstract concepts, teachers seem to prefer "chalk and talk" methods. Suvidya’s curriculum is based on tangible aids that demystify the phobia of mathematics. The learning aids provide realistic meaning to mathematics. Dr. Gananath was instrumental in creating a math lab. The SUVIDYA math lab is a package of more than 100 mathematical models, games, puzzles and activities, and comes with a user’s manual to help teachers implement it. Suvidya has also entered into the area of pre-school learning by starting bal-kendras for children in the age group 0-5 years in the Raichur district.
