Work Description
CFL is an English medium co-education school that describes itself as 'the place where learning is fun'. Pedagogically it uses many different learning materials and methods for learning. Some of the salient features of CFL are given below.

CFL has a mix of children from different economic backgrounds - poor to upper middle class. The current strength of the school is 30 of which 18 are fee paying children and 12 children have sponsorships. The school aspires to maintain a 50-50 ratio of fee-paying and sponsored children and is looking for sponsors to increasing the strength of the latter. The sponsorship amount is Rs 6000 per child per year, which covers the teachers' salaries, building rent, large amount of arts/crafts used by the children. The teacher-student ratio is maintained 1:15 to ensure individualized attention by the teacher. The school does not believe in competition and stresses on cooperation as a way to motivate and bring out the talents of the children. While accepting the idea of different levels of capacities of children in particular areas, the school tries to identify the varied natural abilities and interests of the child and nurtures them in multiple directions. The school first accepts the child as an individual, without judging her. Because of the above two aspects, the school has attracted the attention of many parents whose children have been judged harshly in conventional schools. These children are doing well in CFL, because in most cases, the only abnormality was that the child did not fit into preconceived notions in conventional school teachers and administrators. Overall, CFL is indeed an excellent centre of learning.

The school has moved too often and every time it moves it looses some the children because of the distance problem. There was a time when the school had 100+ children up to 10 std level. Having recently acquired land, CFL is working on raising funds to build its own permanent school building.

Resources Available
Gurveen Kaur and others involved in CFL are very strong in theoretical aspects of education and this has helped CFL bring out a journal called 'Edu-care' to discuss issues connected to education. CFL also organizes regular counseling and discussion sessions with parents of children studying in CFL or elsewhere. The school has a learners' club, where children and adults can together enjoy learning new skills.

Details about Edu-Care: A Forum for education concerns Quarterly Magazine in English. Edu-care takes up a specific theme in each issue related to education such as "play", "competition" and "culture" and analyses them to great depths. The articles are from CFL members as well as from readers. Discussion threads on topics from previous issues are also published.

To Subscribe: Rs.100 for four issues (each year there are 3 or 4 issues). Please contact CFL for details about postal costs and for subscription outside of India
