Feedback on Workshop
Arts and Crafts Workshop, May 2003, Chennai
- Did the workshop meet your expectations?
- Yes, was as I expected and learnt a lot from this workshop.
- Came without any expectations to this workshop.
- Better than what I expected.
- We came here thinking it would be on maths and science, but it turned out to be different. However, I liked the workshop very much and the way it was conducted was very good.
- I came thinking it would be math and science workshop, but we found it to be an unexpected kind of workshop on arts and craft and I liked it a lot and found this workshop very useful.
- Was not what I expected.
- What better than what I expected it would be.
- It was better than what one expected. A lot of activities were covered and a good exposure provided for the various possibilities.
- I have never been to such a workshop before. I thought that such workshops will cover only one topic, however here we learnt many activities and I am very happy about it.
- Yes, but I would like to learn about teaching methods as well.
- How will the workshop help you with your teaching?
- Since we use arts and craft in English teaching, this workshop is useful for me.
- Painting will be useful in teaching our children some math concepts (symmetry etc), useful in drawing diagrams in biology, color identification.
- Such activities apart from academics will help the child develop concentration and also helps in balanced development of the brain.
- This will be helpful in bringing out children’s creativity, artistic capabilities, their talents and make them enthusiastic and energetic and be active in the classroom.
- The workshop will help in teaching through activities.
- We work with drop-out children in our area and such activities will help us to increase their interest and enthusiasm.
- Activities taught here will supplement the method of teaching in our school which includes arts and craft for teaching other subjects as well.
- These activities will help in my development and also self development of the children. The children can also become good in some of these activities in future.
- Difficult topics can be described with help of color pictures and clay models, which the children can make them selves.
- I believe this kind of teaching will increase the interest of the children in learning.
- If the children become good at such skills, they can also use it to start small scale production units.
- Craft work is poor in our schools and this workshop will help us start this.
- We have been doing clay work, paper work and stitching in our school, but we have not giving importance to the beauty and perfection of the product. We have used only waste material but now we know that addition of small bits of colored paper and thread can make the objects utilitarian as well as presentable.
- These activities help bring out the individuality of a child and will help in better understanding of the child.
- These activities will help in increasing the thinking capacity of the child.
- I am a science teacher. If I want to teach about hear, I can ask them to make a model of heart using clay. This will help in better understand than the blackboard method.
- The activities learnt here will be very useful and I would further develop my abilities in these areas and use them as much as I can.
- Of all that you learnt here, what would be the most useful for your teaching?
- Everything will be useful for bring out the creativity of the child and for the child’s development.
- We do not have needlework and stitching in our school. Stitching used to be learnt ‘Life Education Center’. We have learnt to introduce stitching/needle work through this workshop and we will introduce this in our school through appropriate activities for each age-group of children.
- Painting, claywork and craft is very useful for our education method.
- Claywork will be helpful in increasing concentration, painting collage will be useful in making greeting cards and paperwork (skeleton) etc will be useful in academics.
- All that we have learnt here will be useful, especially in creating a friendly teacher-student relationship.
- Preschoool – collage work, Primary section – Clay, puppet, Yound Adults – claywork, bag-stitching and needle work.

- Designing things with clay was a bit difficult.
- Though I understood paperfolding activity, doing it again myself will be a bit difficult.
- Did not understand paper folding properly.
- Was the time given per session sufficient?
- Time was not enough for the stitching activity(needlework), collage painting.
- Was enough, but we were not able to finish everything.
- Was not enough.

- Yes, we will certainly share our experiences at this workshop with them.
- Yes, we can, request you to provide us with further inputs when we find difficulties.
- If other teachers are interested, certainly I will share with them.
- In our school, we share experiences from workshops we attend, so we will certainly share this experience.
- Would your group be interested in sending more teachers for a similar training?
- Yes, very keen.
- We were told that only 3 teachers can be accommodated, otherwise more teachers would have liked to come.
- If you inform us of more such workshops, more teachers from our school will certainly come.
- Will be decided by our trust.
- Yes, can such workshops be organized for kids?
- Yes, there is a lot of interest. I would also like to join them.
- If you provide opportunity, the teachers will certainly come.
- Would you refer this workshop to other organizations and schools? If so please do let us know the name and addresses of the organizations.
- Is there something that you learnt here, which you cannot use in your teaching or implement in the schools? What are the reasons for this?
- Everything can be used in the schools.
- We will not get a copy of the skeleton framework in our schools and so do not how to reproduce it.
- We can use everything after we have practiced it ourselves for sometime.
- Whatever activity needs taking Xerox will be difficult to do in our area.
- Getting good clay to do clay work is difficult in our coastal area and so clay work might be difficult to do.
- Painting, paperwork etc we already do in our, only stitching we were not doing, not we will start doing that also.
- Circus man, skeleton, flexigon – we do not have the necessary material for this. And drawing these is very difficult. Moreover we do not have scissors etc for this in the schools.

- Afternoon food was good. I did not stay here for other times.
- Would your organization be able to provide space, food and accommodation for arranging such a workshop?
- Food and Space for training can be arranged, no space for stay (Isaiambalam).
- Possible (New Creation).
- Possible, not possible (no place to stay) (WARM).
- Possible, can accommodate between 20-30 people at a time (Anawim).
- Possible, after discussions with headmistress of our schools (Olcott Memorial).
- Possible (RHEDT).
- Possible, contact our administration(Anugriha).
- Possible, contact administration (Jeevan Gyanodaya).
- Only dorm facilities can be provided, no rooms only basic space(Puvidham).
- Suggestions for how this workshop can be made better?
- More time for every session for better understanding and making many of the sample items shown.
- Will be nice if there are more activities with the skills learnt at the workshop.
- Need more trainers and need to cover other topics like languages, science, maths, theater, music etc.
- If groups’ size is limited to 5 people it will be better.
- Cover more such craft activities.
- Provide such trainings not just in Chennai but also in other districts in Tamilnadu.
- Organise such camps for children as well and not just limit it to teachers.
- If there are about 5 teachers in a groups, we can learn better, and the trainers can provide individual attention.
- There were many things to do at the workshop and the mind was not very quiet – wanting to do all of them. It would be nice to include some exercises, games for taking a break and quieting the mind and hence enjoying the workshop better.
- It will be nice to have outdoor games in between or warm up for 5-10 minutes in between as people get tired sitting and doing activities all the time.
- The workshop time, the activities and worktime are well structured. However there needs to be follow-up so that we do not stop rolling after sometime.
- Need more time for craft activities and make different things.
- Need more than 3 days for these activities.
- Please try to finish the activities of the day by 5:30 or 6:pm, including discussions.
- Some teachers could do certain activities while others did not. It will be nice if all teachers can do all the activities.
- Have separate workshops on each of the topics covered at the workshop.
- Workshops on using low cost materials in teaching needed, since many schools cannot much on such activities.
- What other topics would you like a teachers training workshop to include?
- Can include discussions and questions about what we have learnt in the evening.
- Free drawing, painting, hand puppet, origami work, music, weaving, calligraphy.
- Attitudes in the classroom, relationships between teachers-students, teaching philosophy, psychology and the place of love in relationships to the world.
- Teaching methodologies, how teach using play-way method, drawing and other handicrafts, introduce puppets made by cloth, more methods of painting, making mask, soft toys patchwork, oil painting, metal work, nature walk, story telling, relaxation games, paper folding, mathematics, science, more sewing.
- It will be nice to have some activities/games so that the teachers can interact and build a relationship with each other during these 3 days.
- Basket weaving and wire work.
- It will be good to bring out books on how to do these activities.
- Can teach how to make different things using waste and old materials instead of having to buy everything from the shop (as in what was taught at the workshop).
- Similar to giving importance to arts and crafts, we would also like teaching aids in languages (reading, writing).
- Anything else that you would like to tell us?
- This is the first time I am attending this kind of training. I can do all I have learnt at school and home.
- Normally in other trainings lot of talking happens, while here there was more activity than talking. Instead of 3 days, the workshop should be for a week so that we can be good at arts and craft. Please try to avoid English words while talking in Tamil as I could not understand some of the instructions and were able to do the activities only after seeing someone else do it.
- We would like to see if we can make utility products using the skills we have learnt. We hope that we can have many more such workshops as we have a lot more to learn from Ravi and Chitra and maybe have one workshop for each topic.
- I would like to explore seeds collage in my school.
- I did not get to learn blackboard drawing that was done for the other batch.
- I was disappointed that I was not able to do some of the activities that other group did. It may be a good idea to just have one group or ensure that both groups do the same activities.
- What was taught was easy to understand and hence will be easy to teach our children.
- I will be eager to learn much more than this in the future workshops.
- Introduction to the workshop was nice.
- All that I learnt here was new to me and I was very keen to learn it. Everything was taught well, with proper instructions, and with lot of patience.
- Interaction with other teachers was very good.
- It would have been good if all activities were related to only one age group of children.
- It would be good if this training for a couple of days more with a couple more topics and activities.
- America-Iraq, India-Pakistan, Israel-Palestine, this and many more, there is a lot of violence and war. Peace has become very important after seeing all this. Children become hopes of a peaceful future. For this, it is important to develop peace, patience and interest in them, through which we can look forward to world peace.
- The happiness in creating something with our own hands is very great and thanks for giving this opportunity.
- This workshop was one of kind and gave us much opportunity to learn about painting, sewing etc.
- It will be good to have this training in other places in the future as well.
- Allocate more time for sewing so that we can make more items.
- It will be good to provide a small booklet on the basic techniques of all that was taught at the workshop as this would help us in making new things with the skills and techniques and also to remake what we have learnt here.
- We did not have enough time to complete certain things. It would be good to give us more time to complete them so that we can teach the children without any difficulties.
