Overview
The mathematics workshop for two days was highly interactive and interesting. Basic mathematical concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division was introduced in simple forms using teaching-learning materials (TLM). To make math simple and interesting the creative usage of TLM plays an important role. Participants were grouped and were given different TLM to explore. Each group activity was followed by personal reflection that made many concepts clear and majority of the participants found this as a relearning experience. One of the interesting things about the workshop was a different thoughtful anecdote and stories linked to different mathematical concepts played a vital role in maintaining the self-motivation of the participants. Practical demonstration with class 4th and 5th gave new insights to the participants for teaching LCM and fractions. Children not only enjoyed but also were able to digest basic concepts easily. During the workshop participants were asking questions and were also sharing their personal life experiences in context of how
math was made difficult by their teachers.
Participants Feedback
- The workshop was really helpful. As I am with the pre-school and thought the higher mathematical concepts are just theories which are to be just mugged up and vomited out in the exams. But today the whole workshop gave me a very practical point of view. The implementation of the mathematical concepts in our day to day life, the abstract to concrete. Its actually a re-learning process for us. We know all these as theories but now we’ll be using all of them in a better way. The Jodo tools are the excellent hands on material for teaching multipurpose concepts. it gives a freedom to explore and go deeper into mathematical thinking. the kids do have problems in addition and subtraction i.e. carrying and borrowing but the Dienes Blocks are the most simple and easy going and user
friendly. The child actually experiences the theory in a more practical
way.
- The experience was quite good. Learned a lot of new methods to teach the students. They taught the method that were much easy for the children to understand and develop interest towards the subject. They put lot stress to make the concepts clear to the students rather than the mechanical method. they also showed some of the activities which can develop thinking abilities amongst the students. Special teaching aids were used which we don not get in shops so we feel we need to buy them if we want to use these methods to teach the students.
- Overall Session was clear and useful.
What we liked:
- presenters were very clear,
- examples were very good,
- activities such as factors with jodo cubes,
- horizontal representation then mala,
- LCM story activity,
- dice for developing number sense
Criticism:
- Subtraction through the place value cubes looks complicated. will be tedious in the classroom. Its not very interesting.
- Introduction of place value system wasn’t talked about in depth.
- How to teach number writing along with developing number sense not clear.
- Personally I feel the workshop was very interesting. the session had an excellent starting.
Various activities made the session lively as everybody participated in group. Several mathematical games were introduced which made the topic like
LCM, perimeter etc very interesting which may seem to be very boring. Overall very enjoyable session which had so many ideas to make mathematics all the more interesting and simple.
- The workshop was very useful to us especially for pre-primary children. they have taught about number using the beads mala, bead rod and blocks. Bead mala and bead rod is very easy to learn the numbers
up to 100. If I get a chance I can use these and what I learnt in the workshop. I am very thankful to them.
- This workshop is really helpful for me and my baby doll. For the first time I have attended this type of workshop. I really felt that this kind of workshop is helpful for me because I am very poor in English and
Math.
- This workshop has been a relearning experience because all these materials we have seen today can be used for so many
pre-math activities. With the help of number string the children will be able to gather a good sense of numbers and also the place of zero. Introduction of numbers with dice is an excellent and corresponding value relating to objects. I liked the way with the help of jodo cubes even and odd numbers can be taught. On the whole I found these materials very user friendly and can be used for many concepts.
Participants Suggestions
- More ideas should be given on the teaching pattern used in the pre-primary classes.
- If exact topics are given in advance it would be much better so that more. teachers can get benefit. If possible, can also provide some written material.
- It was very good and interesting but if we would have some more exercise then it would be much more interesting.
- More group activities can be done to make the workshop more interesting.
- Some materials for the topics of Measurement, Time and Money can be developed or some games to teach these concepts.
- If would have been nice if you would have got more materials for pre-primary. Otherwise it was nice for higher classes.
- The workshop can be divided into periods for which the primary, secondary teachers can attend according to the classes they take.
