Minutes of the 4th Annual Conference at Ahmedabad Minutes main page "Night Schools and Children's Parliament in Tilonia " (A session by Mangi Devi, Norath,Santhosh and Santosh from Barefoot College) Mangadevi started the session with her personal story. She said that she did not go to any school. She came to know that Bunker Roy and Aruna Roy were in their village. They were educated people and she used to go their house to do handicrafts. Later mamy women joined her. They were offerred loan to buy sewing machines. Most of them were not happy with the idea of taking a loan. Mangi devi came forward along with 20 others and worked with the rest of the women. They underwent training in tailoring. They started to work for export on piece work basis. They underwent a six month literacy programme. They learnt about their rights and learnt about basic health. These women then went to the other villages and shared their knowledge. Manga Devi represented their group at the national women's conference in Pushkar. She was asked to speak in front of the mike. First she was scared. But when she saw educated people also feeling nervous, she lost her fear of stage and spoke. She came back and organised the women. The women underwent training multipurpose jobs like repairing of pumpsets, solar panels. They were capable of repairing solar lights. She proudly said that there was nothing that a woman could not do. They organised a women's mela and everyone worked very well as a team. They have learnt to fight out their problems and they even go the courts on issues of dowry etc. She felt very happy that she had this oppportunity which empowered their lives and brought a lot of confidence in them. They have become a model for developing countries. Barefoot college opened 120 night schools for the working children. The children from these schools have formed a parliament. They elect their ministers, have different portfolios and conduct meetings. They discuss different issues and in this way they learn to handle their responsibilities.
