Philosophy/Beliefs
Our vision of an ideal society is where economics is guided by the concept of sufficiency and wants are limited; all work - manual and intellectual - is given equal respect (Gandhi); where humans live in harmony with nature, and creativity and diversity is encouraged (Tagore); where universal love and tolerance is actively practiced (Kabir). We believe that child education has to be in tune with this larger vision of society.
We believe that unfortunately India went for one standardized school model in the hope that we would become a photocopy of the industrialized urbanized world. We believe that India needs much more diversified education system and curriculum. Our search is for a rural alternative in keeping with the Gandhi - Tagore vision through our own model schools as well as by intervention in the government schools. We see a much larger role of teachers, of community, and of local government on the issue of school education and are actively engaged in experiments to evolve these roles.
Work Description
- 14 Pre-Primary centres with 900 children (since 1992)
- Intervention in 10 ICDS centres for introducing and activating enjoyable pre-primary education (since 2006)
- 4 Primary schools with 500 children (since 1996). Experiments with content, method, evaluation, cultural inputs, children's committees.
- Systematic workshop with mothers for their active involvement and creation of "resource" mothers (since 2002)
- Intervention in 150 govt primary schools to improve their overall quality (since 2002 )
- Out of school, hands-on, village development work with 600 youths of 10-16 age group in 8 villages for evolving relevant rural curriculum (since 1997)
- Intervention in 17 govt high schools for teaching Environment and gradually going towards total quality improvement (since 2006)
- Working with 6 gram panchayats to see what role they can play to improve their ICDS and primary schools (since 2006).
- Training to 116 primary teachers from 15 NGOs of 5 districts in West Bengal (since 2004)
- Overall Empowerment training to selected govt primary school teachers (since Feb 2008)
- Work with NSS students of 2 colleges (since 2006)
- 15 day Pre-Primary training in three phases in Bengali
- 15 day Primary training in three phases in Bengali
- 3-5 day Primary level Maths training in Bengali
- Training for secondary school teachers on crafts (from village wastes) and work education
- 5-7 day training on Bratachari - dance - songs - games - theatre - village development activities
