Objective/Mission/Goals
Vishakha is a voluntary organization working for women's empowerment, education, health, literacy, rights of children and livelihoods in rural Rajasthan from 1991 in the Phagi block of Jaipur district. Its primary aim has been to work in the area of women's development and children's right and strive towards the goals of equity through community participation.
Vishakha' work has primarily focused on following goals -
- To empower women and other marginalized sections of society and to understand and advocate for incorporation of their perspective into state level policy
- To work towards establishment of women's identity through all those activities that builds their capacities to emerge as empowered individuals
- To introduce innovations in the area of primary education to enable children of deprived groups to become part of the educational process
- To create a resource centre wherefrom documentation, analysis and dissemination of relevant information on issues concerning women, children and other marginalize communities can be taken up
Work Description
Some of the initiatives by Vishakha are:
- Community based libraries - Created 40 community managed libraries in different villages of Phagi block. After much exploration books suiting the taste and needs of rural reader's including neo-literates have been collected. Libraries are perceived as activity cum education centre for those villages.
- Creation of local-culture based curriculum - Vishakha has developed a multi-group teaching curriculum for primary levels on the basis of local traditions and cultures, which was tested and implemented in 60 educational centers.
- Empowerment through Health Education - Awareness on reproductive and community health issues through creation of village health groups of women and men and adolescents, trainings use of various local communication media has been taken up.
- Mahile Salah Evam Suraksha Kendra - A joint effort of the Rajasthan Police and 11 women's groups including Vishakha and civil society groups based in Jaipur. Its a holistic redressal centre for women and children who are victims of violence. Based on the learnings of this, Vishakha is facilitating the opening of such centers in 11 other districts with the collaboration of Rajasthan local women groups, civil society groups and Rajasthan Police.
