The Viveka Foundation - A Centre for Alternative Perspectives
Meanings for the term viveka include "discernment", "discrimination" and "wisdom". The Viveka Foundation is a center for alternative perspectives dedicated to the quest, sustenance and promotion of viveka through its many activities. At the core of these is our commitment to the dissemination of alternative ways of knowing, living and being through a variety of publications that not only generate new wisdom frameworks, but also question and analyse dominant paradigms. There is a growing realisation that India has perhaps made the grave mistake of promoting a paradigm of development that has de-linked her cultural and spiritual past from her future growth. All over the world, nations are attempting to reclaim their cultural values from an all-pervading materialism and translating them into human-development work. Viveka hopes to reinforce and draw attention not only to cultural diversity within the global context but also to localised and specific regional diversities within the Indian sub-continent. The primary tool which Viveka has employed towards this end is, what we call “alternative publishing”. Prior experience shows that there are several possibilities of organic expansion and diversification through and from this medium itself. ALTERNATIVE PUBLISHING Small publishing initiatives have always been at the questioning edge of dominant paradigms and flirted with orthodoxy. Though smaller than mainstream publishing in scale and reach, their catalytic role in bringing about social, spiritual and developmental change cannot and should not be overlooked. But there is a marked difference between a small, low-circulation publication of a commercial orientation, and a truly “alternative” publication, the difference based purely on intent and content. Here the fundamental commitment is to the quality of life, both human and otherwise, where commercial concerns are not the sole motivating factor of the enterprise.
