Ananda Bharathi Keywords Girls, Urban Poor, Upper Primary, school Geographical Location Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh Languages Telugu, English Work Description Ananda Bharathi is an alternative school exclusively for girls from poor economic backgrounds. The school functions from 2:00 to 4:30pm since most of the older girls studying in the school work as house hold maids. The total number of children in the school is 35 and there are 5 teachers - Janaki Iyer, Sailaja, Jyothi, Anuradha, and Jyothi. The teachers give personal attention to each child. The children affectionately address their teachers as 'akka' (sister). The children study at a pace that suits them individually. When the teachers feel the children are ready to write Class 7 exams, the children appear for the exam as private students. After 7th standard exams, the children are enrolled in nearby high schools. The school is in a rented building. And there are three small rooms and a hall which are all used as class rooms. Children sit on the floor with low writing tables. The teachers also sit on the floor. The school also gives the girls tailoring lessons in addition to their regular curriculum. Various posters and learning aids are used during the learning process.
